EdixaMat A.Schacht Ulm Travenar 2.8/90mm Portrait-Lens

Here is another old gem from 1962/63 from germany for you

The A.Schacht Ulm Travenar 2.8/90mm, developed by L.Bertele, was seen first on the market in 1962/63 (Information from I-Net)

A. Schacht did work for CZJ from 1913-1919. From 1919-1926 for ICA AG, later Zeiss Ikon AG until 1939. 1939-1946 he worked for Steinheil Munich.

In 1948 he founded his own company. Lens building ended in 1970.

This is the lens... with some very interesting details.
The lens was a gift from a good old friend of mine.
Should be a Sonnar type (sorry, no scheme found)
It has the old fashioned "Zebra-look" i love sometimes..





One of the impressive details is the 16 blade aperture... for an ideal circular of highlights in the bokeh.



Another very impressive detail is the mechanical construction.
There is a tension ring for opening the aperture and an extra wire release connector on the lens for closing the aperture at the shot.



The lens is nearly uncoated. A light blue shimmer was removed by myself because the lens has some problems behind the front element. Now its clean but has some small scratches from the cleaning.

No worries about that.. the lens does a fantastic job..

The Travenar has a very nice Bokeh and a near perfect colorendering.
With the 16 blades the transient from fore- to background is warm colored an smooth, best of all lenses i have..

Small correction.. after searching some informations, it seems to be an
Ernostar type lens and not a Sonnar type...

This Travenar-Design by Ludwig Bertele could be called a "simplified Tele-Sonnar" design and can be found in the CZJ 4/135 and 3.5/135 as well. Classic Sonnar should have "three cemented lenses".

I've got a Travegar 100 / 3.3 which can be razor sharp. It has possibly the same multi bladed aperture and wonderful bokeh. But it's a lens that sometimes fails me, and I don't know why. I should use it more often and see if I can get results like this. This 90mm does look very impressive.

I vaguely recall that the Alpa book by Lothar Thewes states that the Schacht 2,8`90 was a 6-element design- I will try to dig up the book as well as the lens & post results.

I have the later version of this beautiful lens with only 6 diaphragm blades .
It's a beautiful lens, very sharp and the colours are fantastic. The only slight issue for me is purple fringing which can be quite strong wideopen.
