The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM is the first EF prime macro lens with the focal length shorter than 200 mm which is equipped with an optical image stabilizer, which facilitates quality macrography without a tripod.
The new Hybrid IS system is able to correct an image at approximately 4 stops, compensating for camera shake, when shooting in the ordinary mode. Ceramic ball bearings with low friction ratio support movable elements, which enables smooth movement necessary for compensating for camera shake when shooting macros. Hybrid IS corrects shifts and angular motion, which is very problematic in macro photography. The system features 3 stops at 0.5x magnification and 2 stops at at 1.0x magnification.
The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM is equipped with a 3-position focus distance limiter binding a focal range and a selected subject (0.3-0.5 m). As different form the previous model, it offers a separate macro mode.
As well as the other L-series products, the lens has a dust and moisture protected rubber seal. Besides, the Super Spectra lens coating effectively eliminates flare and halation.
The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM is compatible with all accessories, including: Tripod Mount Ring D; 67mm macroflash adapter, ET-73 lens hood, EF12 II and EF25II extension tubes. The tripod mount is easily attached to the lens without adapters, which makes switching from horizontal to vertical orientation fast and easy without redirecting the camera. MR-14EX and MT-24EX flashes can be attached via macroflash adapter.
The picture features the optical system with the image stabilizer marked red and the UD element marked blue. MTF charts (center and borders) - according to the tests from LensTip.com and PhotoZone.de.
