The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM is an inexpensive, popular, reliable, high-quality medium-sized and -weight telephoto macro lens which can take life-size pictures. As compared with the previous lens of 1990, it features a ring-type USM autofocus drive with full-time manual focusing correction (FTM). Internal focusing makes the lens length constant with the working distance of no longer than 15 cm. When shooting life-size pictures at the minimal focusing distance, the maximum aperture retains its setting of f/2.8, but the focal length decreases by approximately a quarter. There is a switch of possible focusing range from Full to Limit (from 48 cm to infinity).
The lens generates images very fast, providing accurate color rendering, excellent resolution, superb sharpness and contrast across the frame from f/2.8 onward, which makes it possible to use the lens for the other types of photography as well, besides macro.
Canon has regularly released 100 mm macro lense once a decade for the last 30 years.
