The Canon EF 180 mm f/3.5 L Macro USM is Canon's longest telephoto macro lens . When used on APS-C digital cameras, the effective focal length is 288 mm. The focal length this long makes it possible to keep a good distance from subjects (animals, insects, etc.) without scaring them away, as well as reduces the possibility of shadowing a subject with the lens. The lens offers a 1:1 macro scale, i.e. it is possible to take life-size pictures of microworld subjects.
Thanks to a thoroughly elaborated construction, the lens produces images with accurate color rendering, magnificent resolution, excellent sharpness and contrast across the frame. The system of floating elements provides a high image quality at close focusing distances. The lens is equipped with a ring-type USM that makes focusing very fast, accurate and virtually silent. If necessary, a photographer can manually tweak autofocus with the focus ring. The lens has a focus limiter to provide shooting efficiency at different distances (from 48 cm to infinity or from 1.5 m to infinity). The lens does not extend, which makes the lens easy to use. As the front element does not rotate, it is possible to use circular polarizers and other attachments whose functionality depends on their position on the lens.
