Additional information:
The Canon EF 70-300 mm f/ 4.5-5.6 DO IS USM utilizes a new three-layer diffractive optical element (DO), due to which we have an ultra-compact 100 mm long construction. It is the second lens with a DO element (the Canon EF 400/4 DO IS USM was the first) belonging to the group with a characteristic green ring on the front element.
The image stabilizer is able to detect a lack of movement, so it can remain in the ON position on a tripod. The standard Mode 1 corrects movements for static scenes (horizontal and vertical stabilization). If a camera movement goes on for a certain time, the IS system Mode 2 automatically detects it as a purposeful panning and stops correcting in the corresponding direction, preventing spurious vibrations.
