Additional information:
The Tamron AF 18-270 mm f/ 3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) Macro (Model B003) is a compact universal15x superzoom lens with a built-in 4-stop image stabilization system for digital APS-C cameras of major brands. As of 2010 the lens has the widest range of focal lengths among lenses for digital SLR cameras.
The lens is positioned as a universal solution for traveling and as an everyday kit lens. It will suit beginning photographers as a perfect device for determining his/her own preferred focal lengths.
It features rather an attractive price-capabilities relation.
Equivalent focal length: 28-419 mm. At a maximum focal length of 270 mm the lens extends and becomes twice as long.
The optical scheme of the lens includes two aspherical elements, two LD elements and one AD element. However, aberrations are rather notable. There is a pronounced barrel distortion at wideangle and a slight pincushion distortion in the telephoto position. Chromatic aberrations are notable, especially at 270 mm.
The Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) Macro lens employs the Vibration Compensation (VC) system. The manufacturer claims 4 stops of image stabilization, though the test results show an efficiency of 3 stops.
Vignetting is rather pronounced at open apertures up to f/7.1, especially at f/ 3.5 at a focal length of 18 mm, and at f/5.6 at a focal length of 250 mm.
The lens is sharp at the center of the frame. There is a considerable fall-off in resolution on the edges of the frame. The lens shows a maximum fall-off in the range of 35-70 mm, especially at f/5.6-11.
The Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) Macro focusing is rather slow and noisy, but accurate. Occasionally hunting is observed when focusing, especially in low light conditions. Focusing is internal, and the front lens does not rotate, which is convenient for the use of attachments and filters.
Color rendering is natural, colors are not saturated. Contrast is average.
Side and back light is well handled by the lens, but it is better to use the hood.
The 1:3.5 scale macrography is available (at 270 mm)
The AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) Macro lens is suitable for all principal types of photography. This is a good lens for traveling.
It comes complete with a petal hood.
