The Nikon Noct-Nikkor 58mm f/1.2 Ai is an ultra fast standard manual focus prime lens for 35 mm Nikon F SLR cameras.
The optical scheme comprises seven multicoated elements in six groups, including one (1st) aspherical, which provides optimal coma when wide open.
Nikon manufactured about 2,500 of the Nikon Noct-Nikkor 58mm f/1.2 Ai. In November, 1981 the Ai-S version succeeded the Ai lens. Employing the same optical formula, the Ai-S differs from its predecessor in having a 9-blade aperture, smaller weight and a smaller angle of the focus ring rotation (149°). Since 1998 no other lens with such a combination of speed and focal length has been manufactured.
It is quite possible that the lens will be redesigned for digital cameras, as Nikon has got a patent in Japan for a similar ultra fast prime lens – 58mm F1.2.
