The Sigma AF 70 mm F 2.8 EX DG Macro is a full format macro lens with very high resolution from a wide open aperture onwards. This lens has a plane field of the front lens and is able to take correct pictures of plane objects, both a small stamp and a big picture will be sharp from the center towards the corners. A focal length of the lens makes it possible to use an advantageous perspective for face portraits.

Three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) elements provide optimal color  rendering and sharpness throughout the entire range of focal lengths, and  the super multi-coating reduces flare and halation. It has very low distortion, characteristic of macro lenses.  The Sigma AF 70 mm f/ 2.8 EX DGMacrohas slight vignetting at f/2.8 only, but it is almost negligible on a crop.

The kit hood lens is threaded (62 mm) and not reversible, the kit cap is not mounted on it, but you can thread a 77 mm filter or a                              77 mm cap. The filter is not shaded with the hood. On installing a polarizer between the hood and the lens, the hood rotates with the filter.

The SigmaAF 70 mm f/ 2.8 EX DG Macrois equipped with an autofocus limiter which functions throughout the range of 26 to 48 cm or of 55 cm to infinity. The focus ring rotates during autofocus operations. The autofocus itself is slow and noisy.

A scale of possible magnification ratios is marked with white on the top of an extending barrel.

Owners of APS-C cameras will be interested in this lens with  the equivalent focal length of 105-112 mm.

Evaluation of Sigma designations:

  • EX - high-quality line of lenses, combining reliability, convenience and excellent optical characteristics.
  • DG - full format lens optimized for DSRL cameras, as well as for film SLR cameras.
  • MACRO - macrography with the max. magnification of 1:1
