The Tokina AT-X 840 D AF 80-400 mm F4.5-5.6 is the most compact and the cheapestzoom in the range up to 400 mm. In 1996 the lens was upgraded in compliance with requirements of digital cameras. The front element of the lens was applied with multicoating which reduces rereflections for using on modern sensors and eliminates characteristic overexposure and flare. The optical scheme of the lens includes SD glass which eliminates chromatic distortion, securing image definition.
The lens comes completed with BH-725 hood which includes an adapter for a polarizing filter. A rubber wheel sets with one side against the filter, the other side sticks out of the hood, which allows you to control the position of the filter without removing the hood.
The lens uses fast and soft system of internal focusing. Autofocus is rather fast at the level of Canon's micro-motors. Sharpness is good at 80 mm even when wide open and linearly reduces (depending on focal length) to weak at 400 mm. The absence of an in-built stabilization system may be problematic at such a long focal length.
Evaluation of Tokina designations:
-
AT-X (advanced technology extra) - the lens is designed by means of advanced and new technologies and high-quality materials.
-

-
D - ordinary lens for film and digital SLR Canon and Nikon cameras.
-
