The Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM is a super telephoto zoom lens for 35 mm digital SLR Canon EF cameras. The lens is equipped with a built-in 1.4x extender. The professional zoom lens for shooting wild nature and sporting events was first announced in Feb 2011, but the launch was delayed.
The optical scheme comprises 25 elements in 20 groups, or 33 elements in 24 groups with a built-in extender, including one fluorine and four UD glass elements.SubWavelength coating has been applied to the lens' elements. Fluorine coating prevents external optical surfaces from smearing and allows the lens to be easily cleaned.
The lens is equipped with a ring-type ultrasonic AF motor. Its Power Focus mode is optimized for shooting video. The lens also features an internal focusing system, FTM, and a drop-in filter holder. The image stabilizer offers a 4-stop shutter speed advantage and has three IS modes - for static subjects, for panning and one used only during exposure. The lens' water- and dust-proof body is constructed of magnesium alloy. The lens is compatible with other extenders, but in this case the IS will function with EOS-1v cameras only.
