Strengths:
- good color and good skintone
- good black and white
- cheap than CZ Planar C/Y
Weaknesses:
- open wide aperture 1.4 have little clouded
- when shoot direct light some detail is missing.

Strengths:
Compact, not heavy
Sharp wide open
NO CA from f2. Some CA at f1.4 but my copy has some dust and m.b. fungus inside. Got from KEH listed in "excellent" condition. Be warned, they stopped postinf pics of real lenses on their site. Only the stock pics!
Excellent bokeh if the background is further than ~3ft
Weaknesses:
No half-stops. No stops between f1.4 and 2
Front element not recessed, needs hood
A bit nervous bokeh when the background is closer than ~3ft
Veils heavily with direct sun
Shows prominent "stars" with multiple sharp rays with due drops with frontal light falling at ~45 degrees
Comments:
I don't see any significant difference with my copy of the ML 50mm 1.7. Couldn't compare directly, since 50mm 1.4 does not have f1.7 stop. Do not see a big difference between 8 and 6 aperture blades.
The ML 50mm 1.7 is a sound choice, unless you can't live w/o f1.4
