The Canon EF 28-80 f/ 3.5-5.6 USM is the first version of a low-end kit lens with a 28-80 mm variable focal length for Canon EOS film and digital SLR cameras.
Canon issued five variants of the lens, each of which had two versions: with and without USM.
This first variant of the lens is considered to be the most successful. Its optical scheme had never been borrowed by the lenses of this series.
It features a convenient range of focal lengths, a very good optical quality, a fast ultra-sonic motor and very attractive price on the secondary market. All the above factors make the Canon EF 28-80 f/ 3.5-5.6 USM a real bargain as a kit lens, as well as a substitute for a kit lens.
