The Sigma Macro 105 mm F/ 2.8 EX DG OS HSM is a stabilized macro lens with an HSM autofocus drive. MADE IN JAPAN.
The front element is about 41 mm across diameter and does not rotate on focusing. The rear element is recessed 15 mm bellow the bayonet. The angle of the distance scale full rotation is approx. 140 °. Minimum working distance 142 mm from the front lens. The focal length at the minimum focusing distance with a reproduction ratio of 1:1reduces to 75 mm., and its lens speed stops down two steps to F5.6. In practice there are no more than 2.3 -2.5 f/ stops of optical image stabilization instead of 4 claimed by Sigma
The lens has no visible problems with longitudinal chromatic aberration. Lateral chromatic aberration is about 0.02% at the full frame borders and does not depend on aperture settings. Distortion is from -0.2 to +0.3% with measurement error of 0.1%, i.e. almost negligible. Coma is very well corrected, in the corners on a full frame there is some almond-shaped flare visible at f/2.8, which disappears at f/5.6. Vignetting at wide apertures on a full frame 54% (-2.25EV), on a crop 24% (-0.8EV). It doesn't handle well back lighting. Autofocusing is silent and rather accurate, but it is evidently slower than that of its competitors.
Autofocus switch:
-
Full - from 0.312 to infinity
-
from 0.45 m to infinity
-
from 0.312 to 0.45 m
OS control switch:
-
OFF
-
Mode 1 for normal shooting
-
Mode 2 for shooting moving objects
Evaluation of Sigma designations:
-
AF for autofocus.
-
EX - high-quality line of lenses, combining reliability, convenience and excellent optical characteristics.
-
DG - full format lens optimized for DSRL cameras, as well as for film SLR cameras.
-
MACRO - macrography with the max. magnification ratio of 1:1.
-
DF (Dual Focus) - the system decouples the focusing ring from the mechanism of internal focusing when the ring is in AF mode. This system provides easy and accurate lens control, as the focusing ring does not rotate on focusing.
