very soft when wide open, especially at 80 mm;

pronounced effects of distortion and vignetting.
The Canon EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 II has some advantages subsequent upon its shortcomings:

it is very compact and lightweight;

due to a soft picture it can be limitedly used as a portrait lens at 80 mm and maximum aperture settings;

and finally - the price!
The Canon EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 II is a good choice as a kit lens for beginners.
