M.ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses

Olympus Imaging Corporation (President: Masaharu Okubo) is pleased to announce the addition of two new lenses to its Micro Four Thirds System lens lineup: the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 9–18mm f4.0–5.6 and M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14–150mm f4.0–5.6. Designed to maximize the performance advantages of the Micro Four Thirds System, the new lenses are significantly lighter and more compact than comparable lenses of the past. The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 9–18mm f4.0–5.6 is scheduled to go on sale in late April 2010, while the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14–150mm f4.0–5.6 is scheduled to go on sale in late May 2010.

The Micro Four Thirds System standard meets the telecentric requirements of dedicated digital design, which demand that light rays strike the imaging element nearly head-on. But it enables much more compact design than the Four Thirds System standard because it reduces the outer diameter of the lens mount by 6mm, and the distance from the lens mount to the sensor (the flange back distance) by about half. So although M.ZUIKO DIGITAL Micro Four Thirds System lenses offer uncompromising SLR-class quality for both still-image and movie shooting, they are exceptionally compact.

By maximizing the Micro Four Thirds System design advantages of compact size and low weight, the two new lenses significantly expand the photographic potential of the system.

The super wide-angle M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 9–18mm f4.0–5.6 zoom lens (35mm equivalent 18–36mm) offers a 100° angle of view, and overturns the rule that super wide-angle zooms have to be big and heavy. With a length of just 49.5mm and a weight of just 155g, it less than half the size and 60% of the weight of the ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 9–18mm f4.0–5.6. With its wide angle of view, it makes it easy to include background scenery in group photos, and can be used to create unique images with a sense of dynamically exaggerated perspective.

The high-power wide-angle to telephoto M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14–150mm f4.0–5.6 zoom lens (35mm equivalent 28–300mm) is 65% smaller and 70% lighter than the comparable 10x ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 18–180mm f3.5–6.3, making it ideal for everything from portraits and interior scenes to sports and landscape photography. Mounted on the camera full-time, it's ready for any photo opportunity.

Both lenses offer quieter and more responsive AF performance, and assure SLR-class image quality for during still-image and movie shooting. They are compatible with all Micro Four Thirds System OLYMPUS PEN cameras, and all other current and future cameras that comply with the Micro Four Thirds System standard. When mounted on an OLYMPUS PEN camera, it supports the camera body's built-in image stabilization system and offers effective shake compensation at all focal lengths.

Super wide-angle M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 9–18mm f4.0–5.6 with 100° angle of view

Main Features

  1. Dedicated digital design enables high image quality in a compact size
Quality and performance in a significantly smaller size
The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 9–18mm f4.0–5.6 uses an internally retracting mechanism to achieve a minimum lens barrel length of just 49.5mm for outstanding portability. Compact and lightweight, it is less than half the size and 60% of the weight of the ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 9–18mm f4.0–5.6.
A Dual Super Aspherical* objective element, used at the front of the lens, makes it possible for the lens to offer a 100° angle of view, and dual aspherical elements are used at the back, to correct aberration and ensure superior image quality. Thanks to efficient optical design, the lens delivers an uncompromising combination of compact size and high quality, with clear imaging all the way to the periphery.
    * Dual Super Aspherical lens elements are aspherical on both sides, and have dramatically different thickness at the center and periphery.
    Excellent close-focusing performance
At the wide-angle end of the zoom range, the lens offers a minimum working distance of just 15cm, making it possible to capture dramatic, wide-angle macro images.

    Full multicoating of all element
All lens elements are multi-coated to ensure maximum light transmission and image clarity, with minimal ghosting and flaring in backlight.

    Circular aperture mechanism
A circular aperture mechanism is used to assure smooth, even background defocusing.
  2. Superior operating ease
    High-speed autofocus
The inner focusing mechanism uses a light, compact, single-element unit to enable exceptionally fast, quiet autofocusing for smooth, stress-free still-image and movie shooting.

    Smooth manual focus
The manual focusing mechanism is designed to offer a responsive feel, with just the right amount of resistance to enable smooth, precise operation.
