The Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 ASPH lens is an affordable prime for Micro Four Thirds (MFT) cameras and it's the focus of David Thorpe's latest video review.
In the review, David comments on the lens' light-weight, plastic construction, saying: "Even though the lens doesn't have the nice 'made of metal' feel such as the Olympus 17mm f/1.8, it does feel well made."
David also praises the lens for its 'grippy' focusing ring and smooth focusing, plus he says you get 'nicely limited depth of field (DOF) at full aperture' and that you can get 'extra sharpness by stopping down beyond f/2 but it is only really necessary to get extra DOF.'
"The Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 ASPH deserves high praise and it's a bargain," David Thorpe.
David points out that there's no stabilisation or aperture ring like on the 15mm f/1.7 but he does say that when shooting at f/2, you get a fast shutter speed even when using ISO200 so the fact that the lens isn't stabilised doesn't matter so much.
A light source shining directly into, or as near to, the lens can cause some flare and loss of contrast, says David, but the deep lens hood supplied with the lens helps with this and no problems occurred when shooting with backlight.
David didn't report any apparent distortion or purple fringing on shots captured of buildings and usefully, the lens focuses more closely than most 25mm lenses (down to less than 30cm). David also says the angle of view makes the Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 ASPH a very versatile lens - just long enough for portraits and short enough for landscapes. It's also the length of choice for many street photographers too.
Overall, if you have a standard or superzoom, David says it's hard to think of a more useful second lens than this one.

Its a great "Bang for the buck" (Sorry David). I put it up there with the Sigma 19/30/60mm for value for money.
The 50mm field of view is not to my taste, but if you like it, I really don't think you can go wrong buying this lens. It does make the Olympus version kind of redundant as it's more expensive and I think not optically any better and the Panasonic comes with a lens hood!
