The SonyE 18-55 mm f/ 3.5-5.6 OSS is a kit zoom lens with an optical stabilizer for mirrorless (EVIL) Sony NEX-3 and Sony NEX-5 cameras.

On APS-C sensors it produces an equivalent focal length of 27-83 mm.

The lens boasts a traditional Sony build quality: magnesium alloy body, no plays, very convenient and smooth focusing.

The Sony E SEL1855 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS is equipped with a built-in SSM focus motor, which makes focusing fast and convenient. Autofocusing is rather accurate for a contrast detection system. Noiseless focusing benefits video filming: operation sounds are not recorded.

The 4 f-stop Optical SteadyShot system is suitable for shooting in low light conditions.

The optical scheme utilizes three aspherical elements, which effectively minimize spherical and chromatic aberrations.

The lens features a rounded 7-blade aperture. Circles of confusion are almost ideally round.

Barrel distortion is considerable at wide angle. There is a slight pincushion distortion in a telephoto range.

Vignetting is visible at large apertures, but it practically vanishes when stopping down.

The Sony E SEL1855 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS produces rather a sharp picture, especially at the center. There is a considerable fall of resolution at the frame borders.

The lens is well resistant to side and back light. It is recommended to use it with a hood.

The Sony E 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (SEL1855) OSS is suitable for almost all photography and video genres on Sony NEX cameras.

Strengths:

1. Compact.

2. Indeed working optical stabilizer.

3. Good build quality.

4. Very smooth running of the Rings. Especially good for the video

Sony E SEL1855 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6mm OSS - a very good lens.
When I purchased a set of double kit, I was sure that I will mainly use the lens 16 2.8 ...

But after a period of testing, this lens has become my constant standard lens. In fact, very good lens. With stabilizer rather calmly shoot at shutter speeds up to 1/15. Good image quality similar at the Canon 40D. Good resistance to backlight and contre (using a lens hood). Good compactness. After the Canon 5d mark 2 very comfortable to shoot in genre potography. People do not really notice that their shots almost at point blank range!

Videos are also obtained with this lens are very high quality.

I recommend to shoot with manual settings, only in RAW format, and in Adobe RGB color space.

Highly recommend this lens!
