The Sony E 16 mm f/ 2.8 is an exceptionally lightweight and compact kit prime"pancake" lens for Sony NEX-3 and Sony NEX-5 mirrorless (EVIL) cameras.
On APS-C sensors it produces an equivalent focal length of 24 mm.
Two converters are produced for the Sony E 16 mm f/ 2.8 - ultra-wide angle and fisheye. There is also a special viewfinder for Sony NEX cameras.
The lens boasts a traditional Sony build quality: magnesium alloy body, no plays, very friendly and smooth focusing.
The Sony E 16 mm f/ 2.8 is equipped with a built-in SSM focus motor, which makes focusing fast and convenient. Autofocusing is rather accurate for a contrast detection system. Noiseless focusing benefits video filming: focus operations sounds are not recorded.
A maximum aperture of 2.8 coupled with a wide angle enables shooting in low light conditions.
The optical scheme utilizes an aspherical lens to effectively minimize spherical aberrations.
It is equipped with a circular 7-blade aperture, Circles of confusion are almost round-shaped. It produces the bokeh, typical of wide-angle lenses.
Barrel distortion is rather pronounced.
Vignetting is visible at open apertures, but practically vanishes when stopping down to f/8.
The lens is not very sharp at f/2.8; besides, there is a considerable fall of resolution at the borders. At f/4 resolution is satisfactory. It produces good resolution when stopping down to f/ 5.6 onwards.
The lens is well resistant to side and back light. It is recommended to use it with a hood.
The Sony E SEL16F28 16 mm f/2.8 is suitable for landscape, architecture and genre photography, as well as for video filming on Sony NEX cameras. It is ideal for street photography.
