Additional information:

The Cambron MC 500 mm f/ 8.8  is a telephoto mirror multicoated macro lens for 35 mm SLR cameras of major manufacturers of the 1970-80's.

The advantages of the Cambron MC 500 mm f/ 8.8 as compared to other mirror 500 mm lenses:

  1. Very compact and lightweight for its class.
  2. The minimum focusing distance is just 1.8, which makes it possible to take 1:4 macro scale pictures.
  3. Multi-coating.
  4. Cheaper, as a rule, than its rivals.

The disadvantages of the Cambron MC 500 mm f/ 8.8 as compared to other mirror 500 mm lenses:

  1. Its lens speed is lower than that of the majority of сatadioptric 500 mm lenses (usually 5.6 or 8.0).
  2. Shorter travel of the focus ring, which complicates focusing .

The Cambron MC 500 mm f/ 8.8's image quality is rather high. Good resolution and high contrast across the whole frame.

It is not well resistant to side and back light. The hood is strongly recommended.

The Cambron MC 500 mm f/ 8.8 is suitable for those who needs a compact, but at the same time effective, 500 mm telephoto  lens. It is a good choice for traveling.

Period of use: 3 years

Strengths:

I have shot wildlife, and landscapes with this lens. It is easy to use, very functional, even with the f8.0. As long as you keep the high light requirements in mind, this lens does an excellent job.

Weaknesses:

It does work better with film, than some of the nikon digitals. With digital, you have to make sure all settings are a bit above what you would normally shoot, or the image comes out with a lot of lines and noise.

Comments:

For a low cost 500mm, this lens works great. Just keep in mind that this is a lower cost lens, and needs a little extra adjustments. Once you are used to the requirements, it is actually easy to use.
