The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is the next generation kit lens for Canon crop factor cameras. It was meant to replace a moderateEF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II. The following improvements should be mentioned: the optical scheme has been improved; the image stabilizer has been implemented; the finish has been changed; the circle blade-type aperture has been introduced to provide better bokeh.
It looks better, but new plastic does not impress much, even though it is better than that of the previous lens. The front element inner barrel does not dangle any more. Manual focusing by means of the front element frame has remained on paper. The front element rotation during focusing still makes the use of polarizers difficult. A kit hood is tiny, but it is better than none.
Autofocusing is rather fast and accurate, a noise level is very low. According to the manufacturer, the lens features up to 4 stops of camera shake corrections. As different from the previous versions, the lens is able to detect the subject of panning, so it is not necessary now to switch between Mode 1 and 2 to select a stability strategy ( static scene or panning).
If compared with the 18-55 II lens (according to Lens Tip), resolution on the frame edges of this lens is similar to that of the 18-55 II lens in the center. Resolution of both lenses is 5 lpmm higher in the frame center than on the edges.
