This lens has a 15 blade aperture, creating a very nice bokeh. The glass is fine and offers a great resolution and sharpness. Solid made, small body, very smooth focus.
Weaknesses:
The aperture is fully manual. It has to be set before focusing. Front element moves while focusing. There are no coatings on the glass so it's recommended to use a sunshade or to avoid direct sunlight on the reflecting silver iris.
This lens can not be adapted to digital full frame SLR.
Comments:
All weaknesses come from the construction of the lens body wich aimed to a lower price segment.
The leak of coatings can be seen as a plus or a minus, depending on the shooting situation and camera. For digital video, this gives some extra in latency and helps on colour grading. It's a cool close portrait lens for a fair budget.
Sold als Tele-Westanar, Berolina-Westanar, both in M42 and EXA mount. Another more rare and expensive version has an automatic iris and backfocus. (Iscomat) both released in 1961.
