Canon EF 22-55 mm f/ 4-5.6 USM   is a very compact  and light zoom lens for Canon EOS  film and SLR cameras with a range of focal lengths from  ultra wide-angle to normal.

1. Not very reliable plastic build.
2. Slow lens speed.
3. Visible loss of resolution on the edges.
4. It is too soft when wide open, especially at 55 mm.
5. There are some pronounced effects of distortion and vignetting.

1. It is very compact and lightweight.
2. The USM enables fast and silent focusing.
3. An aspherical element in the optical scheme enhances optical characteristics - it increases resolution and contrast and minimizes aberrations.

The Canon EF 22-55 mm  f/ 4-5.6 USM is a good choice as a  kit lens for deginners. In spite of its shortcomings, it is one of the best Canon kit low-end zoom lens.
